Since the Middle Ages, this festival takes place every year on November 11, St. Martin Day and attracts thousands of visitors. The legend of this fair dates back to the Hundred Years War. It was reported that a convoy of roads had to carry a load of herring to supply the warriors and inhabitants of Orléans besieged, but a snowstorm forced them to stop at Lieurey… In order to prevent the herring being lost, they were sold on a sale at auction, organized by the inhabitants. Today, this traditional fair, in the heart of Lieurey, receives merchants of herring and exhibitors of all kinds. It takes place all day with many booths and fairground. At lunchtime, takes place the competition of the biggest herring eater.
