Every year, on the morning of May1st, old-fashioned stamping takes place in front of the Marais-Vernier town hall, with a demonstration of hand-binding hay bales, bundles, and ropes. A word about the setting: an exceptional region of marshes of about 4,500 hectares, located on the left bank of the Seine near the Tancarville bridge, the Vernier marsh is classified for its incredible fauna and flora. Since 1793, the initials MV - you will have understood the meaning - have been marked with a red iron (stamp) on the horns of cattle and the hooves of horses before taking them to graze on the communal grasslands for the season. Today, this traditional stamping is commented on for the public and symbolically perpetuated on about ten animals. All day long: farmer’s market, demonstrations of old-fashioned crafts, rustic lunch with accordion rhythms, and various games for children and adults, including a tug-of-war between the inhabitants of the neighbouring communes. An event not to be missed!
