Cistercian abbey, with a remarkable, sober, and elegant medieval architecture, cultural events every summer.

A legend surrounds the founding of Bonport Abbey in 1189: Richard the Lionheart, Duke of Normandy and King of England, nearly drowned in the Seine. He vowed to found a monastery here if he ever made it to the other side of the river. As in all Cistercian abbeys, the sobriety and elegance of medieval architecture are the order of the day. The superbly restored chapter house, monks' hall, dormitory, kitchens and refectory are all there for visitors to discover. The abbey hosts cultural events every summer.

Opening time and information on BONPORT ABBEY

Closed from October 1 to March 31. High season: open Sundays and public holidays from 2 pm to 6:30 pm. Guided tours from 2 pm to 6:30 pm. From April 1 to September 30, every Sunday and public holiday. July and August, daily except Saturdays. Free for children under 12. Adults: €5. Children (aged 12 to 18): €2. Groups: €3.

L'abbaye Notre Dame de Bonport est une ancienne abbaye cistercienne qui fût fondée en 1189 par Richard Cœur de Lion. L'apogée du monastère se situe aux XIIIe et XIVe siècles grâce à des revenus réguliers et à l'action de ses moines copistes. Il ne subsiste du XIIIe siècle que quelques éléments comme le cellier ou le réfectoire. La vente aux enchères publiques comme bien national en 1791 marque la fin de toute activité monastique. L'église abbatiale est transformée, comme ailleurs, en carrière de pierre par son nouveau propriétaire, ce qu'elle restera jusqu'au milieu du XIXe siècle. Lorsque la famille Lenoble se porte acquéreur des lieux en 1874, il ne reste plus que la ferme, le colombier, le dortoir, le réfectoire et la cuisine. Elle appartient toujours aujourd'hui à des propriétaires privés qui la restaurent.
