In the 6th century, Saint Samson built the abbey of Pental on a promontory overlooking the Seine, now the land of the town of Saint-Samson-de-la-Roque. In 1922, archaeological excavations uncovered the monastery's door, its paving and a Merovingian cemetery with about ten sarcophagi of Christian orientation.
