COLLEGIATE NUN'S WIFE OF VERNON
The collegiate church, in the heart of the historic centre, is a harmonious blend of architectural styles in Vernon.
In the heart of the city’s historic centre, the building was built between the 11th and 16th centuries. Today, therefore, different architectural styles appear: the choir and transept are Romanesque, while the rest is Gothic, whether radiant, flamboyant or late. Inside, the nave is lined with side chapels. In 1658, the ground was raised by 50 cm to prevent recurrent flooding due to the Seine floods. Many repairs on the north vaults of the ambulatory and the gargoyles were carried out in the 18th century. In 1842, a hurricane once again forced the restoration of the building, which was entrusted to the Parisian architect Durand. Do not miss the organ, which dates from the early 17th century and was restored in 1979. Abstract stained glass windows were installed in the 1970s to replace those destroyed during the Second World War. Considered one of the most beautiful specimens of medieval architecture in France, the collegiate church is classified as a Historical Monument.
