THE CHAPEL OAK
This thousand-year-old oak enjoys special protection, commensurate with its fame
This oak tree looks like something out of a fairy tale, with its two tiny chapels, one at the foot of the tree, in the hollow trunk, dedicated to Notre-Dame de la Paix, the other, at the top, called the chapelle du Calvaire or Ermite cell. Dating back some 1,200 years, this is one of Europe's oldest oak trees, which must have seen William the Conqueror's armies pass before it, and still welcomes tens of thousands of visitors every year. It is listed as part of France's intangible cultural heritage.
