Island founded following the destruction of Dieppe by the Anglo-Dutch fleet and the fire that ravaged its streets and buildings.
In 1694, a large part of Dieppe was destroyed by the Anglo-Dutch fleet, and a fire devastated streets and buildings. To rebuild the city quickly, Louis XIV appealed to engineer Vauban. The streets and squares were then widened, and the wooden panelling, too dangerous, was forbidden. The use of local materials (white bricks, Varengeville sandstone) was required. Mr. de Ventabren, who was responsible for the reconstruction, imposed a model characterised by the presence of arches on the floor, already employed under Henri IV in the squares of the Vosges and Dauphine in Paris.
