HÔTEL-DIEU
Beautiful mansion housing archaeological finds from the Gallo-Roman site of La Ville in Eu.
The history of the Hôtel-Dieu begins in 1640, when Mme de Joyeuse, daughter-in-law of Catherine of Cleves, fulfilled the wish of her late mother-in-law: to create a monastery. Hospitaller Sisters of the Order of St. Augustine moved into the "Maison de l’Isle", a beautiful 17th-century mansion, and enlarged it. The hospital opened its doors in 1658 and remained in operation for three centuries until 1967. The Hôtel-Dieu has been undergoing rehabilitation for several years and is home to the archaeological finds of the Gallo-Roman site of the city. The U-shaped inner courtyard, which reveals all the architecture of the buildings, is full of charm, with its harmonious mix of half-timbering, stone, and brick. A children’s playground has also found its place there.
