SALT GRENIER
Salt granary in La Bouille, one of the oldest in the region, which was used to collect salt for the gabelle and which hosts exhibitions.
Built in white stone, this salt granary is, with that of Honfleur, one of the oldest in the region. The place was used to harvest the salt of the gabelle, the royal tax on salt. It was marked, in 1639, by a peasant revolt against the establishment of salt granaries in Normandy. It was in La Bouille that Chancellor Séguier (1588-1672) took up residence to put an end to the insurrection. Today the place hosts exhibitions, including the annual Salon des Peintres, and is part of La Bouille’s 22-step heritage trail.
