Notre-Dame Cathedral is the seat of the Diocese of Le Havre, created by Paul VI, and has been entirely restored in Caen stone.
Notre-Dame du Havre was consecrated as a cathedral in 1974, following the creation of the diocese by Pope Paul VI. Today restored, it was a survivor of the 1944 bombardments, like the Museum. In particular, it lost the great organs donated by Richelieu. The first wooden chapel, built in 1520, was swept away by the tide. The church that succeeded it was destroyed by the English in 1563: what remains is the tower built in 1539, in white Vernon stone. The new church, in Caen stone, dates from 1610. Its latest restoration was completed in 2020.
