ST. JOSEPH'S CHURCH
A modern, majestic church with a square base and a monumental bell tower 107 m high.
One of Auguste Perret’s masterpieces of Reconstruction. Modern and majestic, with a square base, it boasts a monumental bell tower 107 m high, visible from 60 km out to sea. Work began in 1951 on the old plans for a basilica that the architect had imagined: the result was France’s first church, with an altar placed at the centre of a skylight, where the sun plays with Marguerite Huré’s stained-glass windows embedded in the concrete matrix. The shape of its bell tower is said to have been inspired by the Maison de l’Armateur. A must-see.
