ESPACE OSCAR-NIEMEYER
Built from 1978 to 1982 by renowned Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer.
The Oscar Niemeyer space was built from 1978 to 1982 by the renowned Brazilian architect who gave it his name. Located in front of the War Memorial, in the extension of the Bassin du Commerce, it was inserted between the blocks rebuilt by Auguste Perret on a site that André Malraux, post-war minister, had reserved for the construction of a House of Culture. The curves of the two monumental envelopes, now accepted by the population, triggered passions: "atomic power station" and "yoghurt pot" were the two most common names for the building. Another forerunner will be installed in this space: it will be the first store of the bookstore La Galerne, which has become the flagship of the Le Havre book world (today Rue Victor-Hugo). In 1990, the building with its new shape was officially named "Le Volcan". But it is its classification as a UNESCO World Heritage Site that will definitively change the way people in Le Havre and Normandy look at this space. In 2015, after long works, the Big Volcano keeps its status of National Stage, but new equipment accompanies its reopening: a room with perfected acoustics and a chic foyer where you can have a drink. As for the Small Volcano, it has become the epicentre of the new municipal library. It is now considered by the public as one of the most beautiful lending libraries in France, with state-of-the-art technological tools.
