SUGAR BREAD
Visit the Pain de Sucre, a monument built in memory of Charles Lefebvre-Desnouettes, one of the icons of Sainte-Adresse.
Le Pain de sucre is built in memory of Charles Lefebvre-Desnouettes (1773-1822). Napoleon’s general, he was sentenced to death by Louis XVIII, went into exile in America, and, pardoned seven years later, returned to France. His ship sank off the coast of Ireland, taking the general with him. His widow then had this white conical building built to alert sailors to the dangers of the coast, and was buried there. It is one of the icons of Sainte-Adresse.
