30 m high, with six floors and flanked by a 132-step stair turret, this tower is the remnant of a fortress that has been rebuilt many times over the years. The first castle, certainly with a motte and made of wood, was built in the 10th century. The first stone building was built a generation later: it is located in a strategic position, on the road leading from Paris to Orleans. In the 13th century, its reconstruction was the responsibility of Philippe Auguste. A new campaign of work is located in the fourteenth century, before the damage caused by the Hundred Years War, while the struggles between Armagnacs and Burgundians in the fifteenth century, complete its destruction. The tower has been used several times as an experimental site. Pierre Gassendi studied the mechanisms of sound transmission there (17th century), Claude Chappe used it to test his optical telegraph (18th century), then Marie-Alfred Cornu used it to calculate the speed of light (19th century).
