FORMER CHARRAS BARRACKS
Former Charras barracks in Courbevoie, transformed into a vast shopping center
All that remains of the 18th-century barracks is the façade of the central forebuilding. Built in 1756 by Swedish architect Charles Axel Guillaumot, it housed the King of France's Swiss Guards. It's this fine vestige that you can admire in the Parc de Bécon, where it was transferred after the demolition of the other buildings in 1963. These were named after two 19th-century officers, father and son, whom the Third Republic wished to honor. As a sign of the times, a shopping center was built on the site originally occupied by the barracks.
