BELLEVUE CASTLE

Built in the 18th century for the Marquise de Pompadour, this château is a superb building surrounded by extensive parkland, well worth a look if not a visit. The estate was sold to Louis XV, and the architect Jacques-Ange Gabriel redesigned it as a royal residence. During the French Revolution, it was plundered. All that remains today are the Petit-Bellevue pavilion, part of the terrace (now Place du Président-Wilson), an artificial grotto and a guardhouse. To come face to face with these sites is to take a trip back in time.
