SWISS GUARDS MUSEUM

In 1754, Louis XV ordered the construction of three Swiss guard barracks in Rueil, Courbevoie and Saint-Denis. Classified in historical monuments since 1973, that of Rueil is the only one remaining. It is a few steps away, in buildings previously annexed to the barracks, that the Swiss Guard Museum is set up to honour the memory of this regiment. Their fate is as singular as tragic: From Rueil, in the th century, a detachment took the Swiss way to go to Versailles to form a piquet of honour. This attachment cost them extremely expensive, since they were killed by trying to defend the king in 1792. A unique museum in France, it gathers different objects and costumes that belonged to the military and has a documentation centre.
