Spend an evening at the Moulin Rouge and immerse yourself in one of the most emblematic venues in Paris. Here's all the practical information you need to know to enjoy this unique experience.
What is the Moulin Rouge in Paris?
The Moulin Rouge is a Parisian cabaret founded by Joseph Oller and Charles Zidler in 1889. It is located in the Pigalle district, at the foot of the Montmartre hill. Since then, it has become a legendary Parisian venue and even a French symbol. Indeed, the expression is not an exaggeration, since the Moulin Rouge played a major role in popularising the French Cancan, the high-energy choreography in which the dancers twirl their petticoats. The building itself, with its red façade dominated by a large windmill of the same colour, has become a symbol of the capital in the same way as the best Parisian museums. Every year, the legendary cabaret welcomes 600,000 spectators to admire its shows.

Why is it so legendary?
The Moulin Rouge has become a legend primarily because it is one of the birthplaces of the French Cancan, a dance that is recognised the world over as one of the symbols of France. Its shows have always been renowned for their high quality, combining well-orchestrated choreography, feathers, rhinestones, acrobatics and live music. But beyond the dancing, it's the performers themselves, whether dancers or singers, who have made the venue famous. The cabaret has brought out real stars like Mistinguett, and welcomed others like Édith Piaf and Joséphine Baker. The venue has become one of the landmarks of the glamorous Paris of the Belle Époque: all the more reason to spend an evening at the Moulin Rouge.
