ROCKET SQUARE
A former juvenile prison converted into a square with play areas and a waterfall fountain.
The entrance to the square (on the rue de la Roquette side), formed by two sentry boxes joined by a roof, is a reminder of the site's former purpose. From 1830 onwards, it housed a juvenile prison, hence its nickname of Petite Roquette. After the First World War, women were incarcerated here until 1974. Opposite, from 1851 to 1900, was the Grande Roquette, a prison specialising in death row inmates. Today, several playgrounds stand alongside flowerbeds and a cascading fountain surrounded by palm trees.
