LE PORT DE L’ARSENAL
A simple defensive moat in the 14th century, the harbour only became a dock in the 16th century. In the 18th century, a development plan decided to build a canal between the Ourcq river and the Seine. Around 1825, the Canal Saint-Martin was built to link the Bassin de la Villette with the Seine at the Arsenal, reducing the distance between the Quai Henri-IV and Ile Saint-Denis and bringing drinking water to the city. Later, barge traffic turned it into a commercial port, which was transformed into a marina in 1983, and whose gardens are well worth a visit!
