ÉCOLE DE CHIENS GUIDES POUR AVEUGLES ET MALVOYANTS DE PARIS ET RÉGION PARISIENNE
You can nominate your family to become a "foster family" for this association, which trains dozens of dogs every year to accompany visually impaired people. Labradors, German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers need a foster family before they are mature enough to undergo training. The foster family is responsible for socializing the puppy from the age of 8 weeks to 1 year. The foster family must be prepared to take the puppy everywhere with them to familiarize him with all kinds of situations. Not to mention the basic rules of courtesy and obedience, which must be inculcated to the letter - no going into rooms, pawing, fetching, etc. - and then the puppy goes to school. The puppy then joins the school where, for six months, he learns to avoid obstacles, look for pedestrian crossings, stop at the kerb, go up and down stairs... The family stays in touch with the school, which keeps them informed of the dog's progress and invites them to meet the blind person for whom they are intended. Welcoming and training a young puppy is therefore completely free of charge. Food and veterinary expenses are covered by the association. But beware, the selection criteria are precise and relatively strict: availability is the first criterion - the home also counts. We can take a puppy in an apartment, provided there's an elevator, as stairs are contrary to his natural walk. Please note: every year, some puppies don't complete their training and won't become guide dogs. It is therefore possible to adopt one of them.
