THE BIR-HAKEIM BRIDGE
The Bir-Hakeim bridge, featuring beautiful cast-iron sculptures of Nautes and Blacksmiths riveting in Paris.
Previously known as the Passy viaduct, the structure was renamed after the 1942 victory of the Free French Forces over the Germans in Libya. The first metal footbridge, built in 1878, was replaced in 1903-05 by the present footbridge, topped by a viaduct that carries the trains of metro line 6. The bridge's piers are adorned with cast-iron sculptures by Gustave Michel(Les Nautes and Les Forgerons-riveteurs). On the central arch, at the level of Ile aux Cygnes, bas-reliefs allegorize science, work, electricity and commerce.
