VILLA VASSILIEFF
Villa Vassilieff is named after the painter and sculptor Marie Vassilieff, former student of Matisse, who set up his workshop in 1911 at this 15 th arrondissement impasse where she had cubist inspired canvases or surrealist dolls. Threatened with demolition by a real estate project, the workshop was bought in the 1990 s by the City Hall after a mobilization of artists like actress Juliette Binoche and photographer Robert Doisneau. Until 2013, it housed the Montparnasse museum, but at the end of the lease signed with the City, visitors were only 9 000 to push the door of the small museum every year. In order to avoid its disappearance, the Town Hall launched a call for project by stressing the need for an enhancement of the history of the place and district, with Pernod Ricard's partnership. It is the contemporary art Centre Bétonsalon which has won the project and it is now the contemporary art that is in honour in this "young" museum, with a large place made to foreign artists, as was in their time Modigliani, Artists and… Marie Vassilieff.
