Born in India, the shiatsu was taught by Buddhist monks and spread throughout Asia and transformed over time. Literally, this term means fingers pressure and is in different forms according to regions and according to major currents of thought such as Taoism and Confucianism. Not recognised by French legislation, however, the Shiatsu is represented in the Interior by the French Traditional Shiatsu Federation which identifies 93 schools, 471 practitioners and 1 850 members.
