THE PLACE OF CLICHY
A square in Paris where the Barrière de Clichy once stood, with a statue in the middle
Just as the Place d'Italie stands where the barrière d'Enfer on the Fermiers Généraux wall used to be, so this square stands where the barrière de Clichy, another gateway through the wall, used to be. This gate was ardently defended by Marshal Moncey against Russian soldiers in 1814. The statue in the middle of this urban space pays tribute to him. At the crossroads of four arrondissements (8th, 9th, 17th and 18th), the square was redeveloped around 2010 to increase pedestrian traffic and limit the flow of cars.
