PLACE BLANCHE

The many stone quarries of Paris were quarries of limestone, apart from those located in the basement of the Butte Montmartre where plaster was extracted. The Place Blanche owes its name to the carts that carried this latter to the yards of Paris. Day after day, they would be powdering the road and the houses. The great attraction of this place is the Moulin-Rouge – not white! – a famous cabaret and ball founded in 1889 where cancan dancers made the public crazy. The painter Toulouse-Lautrec found inspiration for several of his most famous works. Note that the mill was designed from the drawings of Adolphe Willette. Reviews are always given at this top of Paris by night. Other cabarets are nearby, but beware, they are usually just vulgar tourist traps! Run away from all the touts you'll come across in this neighbourhood.
