THE BATTLE OF STALINGRAD SQUARE
Originally this place is a piece of boulevard de La Villette. He was given his name in reference to the famous and terrible battle which, in 1943, saw Russian armies defeat German troops. It was a major milestone in the Second World War. This space, over which the subway passes, covers the Canal Saint-Martin. You can follow the course in the open air from the south of the square. In the north is the bassin de La Villette, which is the starting point for this waterway. Here you have the rotunda of La Villette, a building that belongs to architect Claude Nicolas Ledoux. Built in the th century, it housed the services of the general farmers'wall. Today, there is a bar restaurant overlooking the river basin, whose wharf has been re-opened in leisure and walking areas. If the area has since been changed, the square and its surroundings remain poorly frequented after dark. If you go to one of the trendy bars adjacent to the canal, do not drag too much and do not leave your valuables.
