THE VENDOME COLUMN
Bronze column, 44 metres high and 3.60 m in diameter, erected on Place Vendôme in honour of the French people
With its unique location on one of the five royal squares, the Vendôme column was erected in 1810 on the model of Trajan's column in Roman antiquity. Reaching a height of 44 meters, it was intended to celebrate the glory of Napoleon1st. In 1871, the column was demolished by the Communards and rebuilt under the Third Republic. Today, many Parisian landmarks are concentrated around it: the Place Vendôme itself, with its luxury shops, the Jardin des Tuileries, the Rue Saint-Honoré, the Rue de la Paix and the Opéra Garnier.
