FONTAINE DU PALMIER
We can date the construction of this fountain from 1806 to 1808. Originally, it was ordered by Napoleon I in order to deliver free drinking water to Parisians. In terms of aesthetics, the sculptors Louis-Simon and Henri-Alfred Jacquemart paid tribute to the Emperor. The building emphasises notably the victories of Bonaparte in Egypt, moreover, when you take a look at its base, you can see four sphinxes. The fountain is shaped as a column, it's adorned with palm tree leaves at its top, it takes its name from that. There is a gilded bronze Victory at its top, it waves the laurels of victory in its hand, work by the sculptor Louis-Simon Boizot. The statue on the spot is only a copy, the original one has taken refuge in the courtyard of the Carnavalet Museum in Le Marais. For the record, know that Place du Châtelet was extended under the Second Empire and, as a result, the fountain had to be moved 12 metres to the west.
