LA FONTAINE MOLIÈRE
Fountain surmounted by a nymph, built opposite no. 40 rue de Richelieu, Paris
In 1838, the house opposite number 40 rue de Richelieu, Molière's last home, was demolished. A fountain surmounted by a nymph was to be built there. But François-Joseph Regnier, a member of the Comédie-Française, had another idea. He saw the demolition as the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to the writer. The building was erected in 1844 under the management of Louis Tullius Joachim Visconti and Antoine Vivenel, who were also responsible for the Saint-Sulpice fountain. The author is shown here seated, almost in majesty.
