LE MUSÉE DE LA MODE ET DU TEXTILE
Setup in the Rohan wing of the Louvre, the Fashion and Textiles Museum is part of the Decorative Arts, an institution that also includes the Musée de la Publicité, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and the Musée Nissim de Camondo, which is located in the 8th arrondissement. With its 86,000 costume pieces, accessories and textile pieces from the seventeenth century to present days, as well as thousands of prints, engravings and original drawings, this museum has one of the richest collections in the world. Fashion victims will particularly be thrilled by creations of designers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries displayed here. You will find big brands like Paul Poiret, Jeanne Lanvin, Elsa Schiaparelli, Chanel, Pierre Balmain, Christian Dior, Andre Courreges, Paco Rabanne, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Lacroix, Alexander McQueen etc. That being said, as these works are fragile, they are exposed only during thematic exhibitions and not permanently. The showcases of this museum are soberly enlightened. Designed as "successive small theatres", they offer a good showcase of dresses. Videos and panels explain how every mode is a snapshot of its era.
