A tomb built on a hill and designed like a garden, housing 70,000 concessions and a million interred people.
This tomb represents one of history's most mythical loves. Pierre Abélard was a philosopher and composer who had a terrible love affair with Héloïse. After beginning her education in a monastery, the young woman from a noble family obtained the right to continue her education with a tutor. Pierre Abélard was chosen for this role, and a love affair ensued. He would shower her with love letters. Fulbert, the young woman's uncle and canon of Notre-Dame de Paris, discovers this forbidden love. Héloïse announced to Abélard that she was pregnant. She gave birth to Astrolabe, with Abélard's family. The lovers even marry out of sight, as this would destroy Abélard's career as a teacher. Eventually, Fulbert reveals the affair and the marriage. Abélard is punished and even emasculated. Making him imperfect in body, this punishment will halt his ecclesiastical career and, by the same token, his teaching career. The kingdom is shocked by Fulbert's private vengeance. The same punishment was meted out to Fulbert, who was emasculated and suspended from office. Héloïse eventually took the veil in Argenteuil, and Abélard retired as a monk to the abbey of Saint-Denis. This love story was a great success for many centuries. This monument is dedicated to this legendary couple.
