Oriental restaurant in Paris offering a little different note and an Oranese couscous.

Omar Guérida didn't change anything about the setting of parisian all in wood ood and bevelled mirrors, which confers the places a different small touch  from the other Eastern restaurants. Its couscous made its notoriety and the clientele is  " Marais trendy": press agents, "trendsetters", etc, crowd to eat the Oranian couscous. Be careful, you may wait a couple of time  because Omar doesn't deal  booking and sometimes unregular clients are replaced by the regulars.

Chez Omar is an institution in the Marais due to the fact that in the 70's/80's it was popular with gallerists and artists. The atmosphere is still interesting due to a cosmopolitan crowd. Food however is fairly basic and we were very disappointed that we were hassled to pay and to leave (ie. not 'overstay'). Avoid if you want to spend a comfy evening in a restaurant and feel appropriately considered.

The lamb roast fell off the bone with beautiful crisp on the outside. The rest was rather pedestrian. The service was fine (prob bc I’m American but I did try to speak French!) until the owner came out who was an absolute delight.

It was convenient to our airbnb but I would not go out of my way for it nor did I regret eating here.

This is a Parisian institution. Best couscous I have had in my life and I’ve been to Morocco… atmosphere is lively and buzzing. Yes it’s loud and a bit cramped but everyone makes it work, it’s Paris! People are enjoying the food and time with friends / family. no idea why people are moaning about the staff, they are superb. it’s a busy place and they don’t miss a beat. Just rock up, wait for a table and go with the vibes. You will NOT be disappointed.

Btw people moanjng about portion sizes - you get free top ups of the couscous and the soup so not sure what there is to moan about on that front
Ps Omar is a legend!!!
