MÉMORIAL DE LA DÉPORTATION HOMOSEXUELLE
Memorial in Paris to preserve the memory of those persecuted for their sexual orientation
The Mémorial de la déportation homosexuelle aims to defend the memory of victims of intolerance in matters of sexual orientation and gender identity, particularly homosexuals persecuted or murdered in Europe as part of Nazi racial policy. Throughout France, the MDH is involved in remembrance initiatives aimed at the lesbian, gay, bi and trans community, as well as public authorities and schoolchildren. For several years now, it has been involved at national level in the ceremonies marking the National Day of Remembrance of the Deportation, representing LGBT people. It works with prefectures, town halls and former deportees to keep alive the memory of deported homosexuals. The MDH also organizes events, discussions, screenings, etc. on the theme of the homosexual deportation, and takes part in several LGBT marches. It encourages historical research in partnership with foreign universities, associations and historians. In particular, the MDH is calling for a plaque to be placed at the Strutthof camp in Alsace to commemorate the homosexual deportation, and supports the naming of streets or squares after Pierre Seel (author of the book Moi Pierre Seel, déporté homosexuel) in several French towns (this was recently done in Toulouse and Mulhouse). He campaigns for recognition of homosexuality as a reason for deportation, and for equal treatment of deportees by public authorities.
