IRCAM (INSTITUT DE RECHERCHE ET COORDINATION ACOUSTIQUE/MUSIQUE)
The Institute for Acoustic and Music Research and Coordination was born in 1970 under the leadership of President Georges Pompidou. Founded by the composer and conductor Pierre Boulez, under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture and Communication, Ircam is one of the largest public research centres in the world. The establishment was completely underground and was under the fountain Niki de Saint-Phalle and Jean Tinguely of the Place Igor-Stravinsky. Why a basement construction? For acoustics of course. In 30 years the Institute has become the main place for producing and disseminating contemporary music in Europe. It develops its three main axes - creation, research, transmission - during a Paris season, an annual festival, tours in France and abroad.
