NOTRE-DAME DE PARIS CATHEDRAL
Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral burned down on 15th April 2019, pledging to reopen in 2024 after renovation.
This world-famous monument, whose very name evokes the French capital for hundreds of millions of people, is a piece of French history: Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral, at the height of its eight centuries and more, stands proudly at the heart of the city. Nearly 900 years old, since its construction began in the 12th century and continued for over two centuries, it is an emblem of Gothic architecture. Visited by millions of tourists, pilgrims and Parisians every year until 2019, its dimensions make it one of the largest in the world: 127 metres long, 69-metre-high towers, immense rose windows whose diameter rises to over 13 metres, 75 pillars, 113 windows... Its western façade, overlooking the forecourt, has changed very little since Eudes de Sully, Bishop of Paris, expressed his wish when construction began. From the outside, the ornaments are unique, starting with the portal of the Last Judgement, a unique piece of art in its own right. On the other side, the semi-circular chevet, supported by large buttresses, overlooks a pretty square. A piece of French history, it has witnessed the greatest events of the last millennium, until the fire of April 15, 2019, which destroyed the roof structure, the spire and a large part of the building. The work was completed in autumn 2024: after 5 years, Notre-Dame once again opened its doors on December 8.
