THE JULY COLUMN
Column erected by order of King Louis-Philippe in memory of the dead of the Trois Glorieuses of July 1830 in Paris
Everyone knows the winged Genius of the Bastille, standing on one foot with a torch in his hand (gilded bronze sculpture by Auguste Dumont), but little is generally known about the column it surmounts. The July Column was so named because it was built by order of King Louis-Philippe in memory of the dead of the Trois Glorieuses of July 1830, the revolutionary days that paradoxically restored the July monarchy and brought him to power. Today, this 50-metre-high edifice is one of the capital's main landmarks.
