THE ARCOLE BRIDGE

Bridge built in 1828 in the form of a suspension footbridge, which took less than three months to complete in Paris.
This bridge, which links the Hôtel de Ville to the Île de la Cité, is steeped in history. First built in 1828 as a suspended footbridge, it was modernised by engineer Alphonse Oudry in 1854. The first bridge built entirely of iron and without any support on the Seine, it took less than three months to build. Doubts persist as to its origin. For some, it refers to the Battle of the Pont d'Arcole, for others to a young republican who died during the bloody revolution of 1830.
