THE ARENAS OF LUTETIA
This Gallo-Roman amphitheatre was built in the century and rediscovered in 1869 during the construction of the Rue Monge.
The city of Paris was built on the ruins of Lutetia, a trading city of the Roman Empire. This rare Gallo-Roman amphitheatre was built in the 1st century and rediscovered in 1869 when the Rue Monge was excavated. At the time, the idea of destroying it was put forward, but many prominent figures of the time, including Victor Hugo, fought to have the monument saved and restored. This was achieved in 1910. Sitting on the bleachers, you can almost hear the sound of the gladiators' weapons clashing and the fervour of the crowd.
