If you enter the Jardin des Plantes via the rue Cuvier entrance, you'll immediately come across the statue of Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, supported by a representation of Paul and Virginie. Sculpted in 1907 by Louis Holweck, it represents the two heroes of the eponymous novel, written by Bernadin de Saint-Pierre in 1787, accompanied by their dog. The novel recounts the adventure of a slave, Domingue, and his dog, who go to rescue Paul and Virginie, lost in the woods.
