THE MEDICI FOUNTAIN
Fountain in Paris, decorated with statues of mythological characters such as Polyphemus and Galatea
When the Palais du Luxembourg was built, Marie de Médicis had a grotto installed in the gardens, which was moved when the Rue de Médicis was built in 1862. On this occasion, the grotto (or façade) was embellished with a 50-metre pool. The whole, now lined with trees, is of unprecedented charm and romanticism. Of particular note is the beautiful statuary group adorning the fountain (Polyphemus surprising Galatea in the arms of Acis). On the other side of the grotto/façade, a fountain also features a bas-relief of Leda, Jupiter and a swan.
