FONTAINE DE L’OBSERVATOIRE
Fountain designed by architect Gabriel Davioud, the fruit of the collaboration of numerous artist-sculptors in Paris
The superb Observatoire fountain, or Fontaine des Quatre-parties-du-Monde, was erected in the Marco-Polo garden above the Luxembourg building. It was built between 1867 and 1874. Designed by architect Gabriel Davioud, it is the fruit of the collaboration of numerous artists: ornamentalist Louis Villeminot (frieze and garlands), Emmanuel Frémiet (the 8 sea horses), Eugène Legrain (globe and signs of the zodiac) and Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (the 4 parts of the world).
