A museum located in Paris, housing some one hundred relief plans, presenting a vast program for the construction of fortifications

When Louis XIV wanted to protect the kingdom's borders, he launched a vast program to build fortifications, a project presented to the sovereign in the form of models. Of the hundred or so plan-reliefs in the museum, some thirty are on display. You don't need to be a military architecture enthusiast to visit this fascinating museum. Please note that until June 2024, due to renovation work, access is via staircase J in the Cour d'Honneur.

10 am to 5 pm (October-March) and 10 am to 6 pm (April-September). Closed on the first Monday of the month (except July, August, September) as well as on January 1, May 1 and December 25. Free for visitors under 18 (all countries) and for those under 26 (residents of the European Union) (and for disabled visitors, job seekers with proof, journalists, ICOM, French and foreign military personnel in uniform for the latter). Full price: 14 €. Reduced rate : 11 €. Guided tour. Children's workshops (family and school). Birthday party. Catering. Store.

Amazing museum and a hidden gem for sure ???? It's incredible how the brilliance of military defense strategy was built upon knowing Maps. Why was Napoleon able to analyze maps in a way that his adversaries could not? ????

Take a hike on the fourth floor of the French army museum. You will find some highly interesting things related to strategic models of quite a few fortresses and cities. With a bit of assistance the wheelchair was no problem and there is some interactivity for a younger audience. In the same complex you will find Napoleon's tomb as well as Vauban's and Turenne's. Excellent giftshop and very friendly people offering coffee etc.
