HISTORIAL CHARLES DE GAULLE
A museum retracing Charles de Gaulle's career through multimedia installations featuring archive images.
The Historial is dedicated to Charles de Gaulle, the hero of Free France during the Second World War and founding father of the Fifth Republic. He has had such an impact on people's minds for several generations that it's impossible to understand the evolution of French political life without knowing what the figure of the General, considered by many to be a guiding light, represented. At the wish of the Charles de Gaulle Foundation and its president, the Historial retraces the career of this great man through multimedia installations. The museography consists of a central room showing archive images, and a circular tour recalling the contemporary events that marked the history of Gaullism. Three rooms, known as "doors", are devoted to the pivotal moments in Charles de Gaulle's life: his childhood and his military career, which began during the First World War, right up to the June 18 appeal, the founding act of the De Gaulle myth. The Historial then looks back at the Free French, his role as head of the provisional government and his disappearance from the French political scene, what he himself called "la Traversée du désert". Finally, you'll discover how de Gaulle created the Fifth Republic and the presidency elected by direct universal suffrage, as well as the two terms he spent as head of state, from the Trente Glorieuses to the events of May 1968.
