OBÉLISQUE
A remarkable obelisk donated by Mohammed Ali, Viceroy of Egypt, erected on the Place de la Concorde in Paris.
The obelisk donated by Mohammed Ali, Viceroy of Egypt, was erected on Place de la Concorde on October 25, 1836, in the presence of Louis-Philippe. It had left Luxor in 1830. In 1998, to celebrate two centuries of close friendship between the two countries, a bronze and gold pyramidion was placed here. Made of pink granite, the obelisk stands 33 metres high and weighs 222 tonnes. An emblem of the square, it was the centerpiece of numerous events during the Olympic Games, as well as the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games.
