PLACE SAINT-GEORGES
Go there and contact
The Place Saint-Georges is one of the major sites of the neighbourhood known as Nouvelle Athènes, which developed throughout the nineteenth century on the southern slopes of Montmartre by adopting stately buildings and mansions. Many artists and intellectuals, notably romantic, are found here: Sand, Dumas, Chopin, Berlioz... In the centre of the square, an ancient fountain is topped by a bust of the artist Paul Gavarni, sculpted by Denys Puech. The column which supports it presents carnival characters, a speciality of the cartoonist. At No. 28, in a Neo Renaissance style, is a hotel which used to be occupied by the Païva. Opposite, at No. 27, the classic Thiers hotel houses the Dosne Thiers foundation. François Truffaut filmed scenes for his film "The Last Metro" in the Saint-Georges Theatre (at the entrance of the street bearing the same name).
