PLACE PIGALLE
A famous and lively site in Paris, with private bars and naughty cabarets
This square takes its name from the sculptor Pigalle, who had his studio in a neighbouring street. In the 19th century, artists and literary figures such as Monet, Degas, Verlaine, and Zola frequented the square, as did hoodlums and prostitutes. Private bars, naughty cabarets, sex shops, and small theatres abound. The beating heart of a world-famous district, it remains extremely lively: in recent years, the southern part of the square, known as "So-Pi" (short for "South Pigalle"), has become a trendy area for nightlife.
