THE HOUSE-WORKSHOP OF THEODORE ROUSSEAU
Visit the Barbizon home and studio of the famous painter Théodore Rousseau, now used for temporary exhibitions
Theodore Rousseau (1812-1867) lived here after having rented in 1847, then bought, "a small house at the bottom of a farmer's garden reduced to two low and dark rooms and a barn which he transformed into a studio", as his friend Alfred Sensier wrote. He died there in December 1867 and was buried in the cemetery of Chailly-en-Bière. The house was the first museum of the Barbizon School. Today the studio is used for temporary exhibitions.
