THE WASHING
A typical Brie washhouse, a meeting place for women who came to wash their clothes in Beton-Bazoches.
Located on the banks of the Aubetin, this fully restored 19th-century washhouse was once the place where women came to wash their clothes, until the 1950s. The mannequins installed show that this task was no easy task. Sheets and other linens had to be soaked, laid flat, scrubbed with soap using a brush, rinsed, wrung out and beaten with a beater. The only comfort was the "lavote", a wooden box filled with straw where the washerwomen knelt.
