LES POTERNES
The postern, to the north of the fortified town, is an open passage in a rampart
A poterne is an open passage in a rampart. To the north of the fortified town, it gives access to the Vallée sèche. In the southern rampart, it leads to the Fusain valley. The staircase leading up to the poterne runs alongside the façade of the former Saint-Thugal basilica, of which only the bell tower remains. Dominated by the parapet walk running along the entire front of the town, they completed the main entrances. This rampart protected the town on several occasions, notably in 1587, when a handful of soldiers and peasants held out against 30,000 Huguenots.
